"The Standing Committee on Federal Judiciary of the American Bar Association
evaluates the professional qualifications of all nominees to the Supreme Court
of the United States, circuit courts of appeals, district courts (including
territorial district courts) and the Court of International Trade." The current
rating scale provides three options: Well Qualified, Qualified, and Not
Qualified
The Committee's website includes:
- a 15-page booklet explaining how the Committee works
- a list of current members
- ratings for judicial nominations, extending back to the 101st Congress
(1989-90)
- written statements submitted by the Committee chair upon the request of
the Senate Judiciary Committee
The Committee rated Samuel A. Alito, Jr., nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court,
"Well Qualified." Senate confirmation hearings on Alito begin this week.
