"The Standing Committee on Federal Judiciary of the American Bar Association evaluates the professional qualifications of all nominees to the Supreme Court of the United States, circuit courts of appeals, district courts (including territorial district courts) and the Court of International Trade." The current rating scale provides three options: Well Qualified, Qualified, and Not Qualified

The Committee's website includes:

  • a 15-page booklet explaining how the Committee works
  • a list of current members
  • ratings for judicial nominations, extending back to the 101st Congress (1989-90)
  • written statements submitted by the Committee chair upon the request of the Senate Judiciary Committee

The Committee rated Samuel A. Alito, Jr., nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court, "Well Qualified." Senate confirmation hearings on Alito begin this week. C-Span and CNN will be webcasting all or most of the hearings. Other news websites will also cover the hearings.
