The Library of Congress, The James Madison Papers, http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/madison_papers/

12,000 items.

72,00 digital images.

1723-1836.

The Library of Congress's new digital collection of the papers of the fourth President of the United States is now available.

The collection is searchable, but the staff of the Manuscript Division have provided several useful guides.

  1. a timeline of Madison's life
  2. an alphabetical list of the items
  3. a list of names
  4. a list of the six archival series from which the items come

Most of the items are correspondence to and from Madison.

A search for the word "federalism" retrieves 12 items, including Madison's original notes on debates in the federal convention, notes on federal governments (1789), notes on religion and the federal government (~1832), and an outline on federal and state government.
