Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment, and Security, The New Economy of Water: The Risks and Benefits of Globalization and Privatization of Fresh Water,

This 48-page report from the Pacific Institute--an independent, nonprofit research center--examines trends in the U.S. and internationally on the privatization of water resources. It addresses:

  • the nature of water (as a renewable resources, as a social good, as an economic good, and as a manageable resource;
  • international trade in water;
  • background on the privatization of water;
  • the risks of privatization; and
  • principles to ensure fairness and protect the public.

The Institute's website includes information about other publications, including the Pacific Institute Newsletter (four recent issues are available for viewing; articles deal with environmental terror, the Kyoto Protocol, water as a human right, and brownfield redevelopment).
