Research in Labor &
Employment Law:
Secondary Sources
Updated March 10, 2011.
Prepared by Mary Whisner.
Secondary sources like books, law review articles, and newsletters are
useful tools for learning about a new area of law. They cite to and discuss
relevant laws and regulations, important cases, and trends and developments.
This guide identifies selected secondary sources for research in labor
and employment law, including US (federal) and Washington State materials.
It also highlights major commercial database services (BNA, LexisNexis, and
Westlaw) that provide convenient combinations of primary and secondary
sources on labor law.
Law Reviews
Articles in law reviews and other legal journals are great sources for
in-depth coverage of specific topics. Full-text searching on LexisNexis and
Westlaw is powerful, but can result in too many hits. Start your research
with a periodical
index to focus your research.
Indexes
Legal Resource Index / LegalTrac
- Indexes more journals than are on either LexisNexis or Westlaw.
Starts in 1980.
- Includes some full-text articles.
- Web version,
LegalTrac,
is available through the Library's website under Find Legal Databases.
- Westlaw:
LRI
- LexisNexis: lawrev;lglind
Current Index to Legal Periodicals
- Indexes journals when they arrive in the library: generally faster than they
are available in LexisNexis or Westlaw.
- Published weekly; the last 6 weeks are
available to UW users.
- Westlaw:
CILP,
the latest 8 weeks.
Full-Text Databases
Both LexisNexis and Westlaw have databases with the full text of law
journals, generally going back to the 1990s.
Legal > Secondary Legal > Law Reviews, CLE, Legal Journals
& Periodicals, Combined (LEXREF;LGLPUB). For non-law students, LexisNexis Academic has a
similar collection of law journals.
JLR:

TP-ALL:

(broader and more expensive)
Both systems also have databases that collect articles on labor and
employment law:
