Research Refresher Course

Are you excited about your summer job, but maybe a little scared that your legal research skills aren't up to the challenge? We have a program for you:

Fourth Annual Mini Legal Research Refresher

Wednesday, April 30, 3:30-5pm, Room 139

Mike Gotham, director of the Career Planning and Public Service Center, will coordinate a panel of second- and third-year students who will describe their summer job experiences with law firms, public interest groups, government agencies, and other employers. They will discuss the types of research assignments they were given, the legal research tools and resources that were available, and what they learned from their experience. Several reference librarians will then review key legal research resources and strategies to help you make the transition.

Refreshments will be provided along with useful information. No fee or registration is required to attend.

Quotation Trivia

by Kris Albertus, Law Librarianship Intern

For those of you who just can't get enough research into your lives, here are a few quotations for you to hunt down. If you can figure out who said each quote, please submit your answers to the Reference Office by 5:00 pm Wednesday to be eligible for a prize!

  1. "The acme of judicial distinction means the ability to look a lawyer straight in the eyes for two hours and not to hear a damned word he says."
  2. "Crime is contagious. If the Government becomes a lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy."
  3. "No, if any fundamental assumption underlies our system, it is that guilt is personal not inheritable."
  4. "I do think that being the second woman is wonderful, because it is a sign that being a woman in a place of importance is no longer extraordinary.
  5. "The Court's opinion will accomplish the seemingly impossible feat of leaving this area of law more confused than it found it."
  6. "Legal writing is one of those rare creatures, like the rat and the cockroach, that would attract little sympathy even as an endangered species."
  7. "I am not a potted plant . . . I'm here as the lawyer. That's my job!"
