Earl Borgeson Research in Law Librarianship Award

Earl Borgeson Research in Law Librarianship Award

Earl Borgeson, '49

This award was established in 2000 to help promote the UW Law Librarianship Program and to encourage scholarly research that will enhance the profession. Each year students in Current Issues in Law Librarianship (CILL) class each write a substantial paper about an important contemporary topic affecting the profession; these papers are then submitted to a panel of nationally-renowned law librarians, who select the best piece and bestow on it the honor of the Earl Borgeson Research in Law Librarianship Award. The winning paper is published in Legal Reference Services Quarterly (LSRQ); other papers are also typically published in LSRQ and in other professional journals. Please visit the the Gallagher Law Library's Earl Borgeson Award Paper Archive to explore the work product of our talented students!

The valuable experience that the Borgeson Award competition provides to each class of U.W. Law Librarianship students would not be possible without the generosity of Earl Borgeson, who died in 2010. Professor Emeritus Earl Borgeson was a 1950 graduate of the UW Law Librarianship Program. In 1999 he was selected as the Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Washington Information School.  Earl was the Law Librarian at Harvard Law School, Associate Law Librarian at Los Angeles County Law Library, and finished his amazing career as the Law Librarian at Southern Methodist University School of Law.  Earl was President of the American Association of Law Libraries in 1968/69 and received the Marian Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award in 1988.

A Biography of Earl Borgeson titled Earl C. Borgeson and the Image of the Law Librarian was written by Susan Azyndar as her CILL paper in 2011. Also see Memorial and Appreciation for Earl C. Borgeson (1922-2010), published in 103 Law Library Journal 507 (no. 3, 2011). Alumni and friends of the Law Librarianship Program are encouraged to contribute to the award fund and thereby ensure that future generations of students produce high-quality scholarly work that advances the profession's collective knowledge and interests.
