Searching the Web

Updated March 28, 2006.

The entire universe of web pages can be searched for practically any combination of key words. This means that if you are looking for materials on Korean patents, for example, you can use an online search engine to find out quickly and easily how many sites on the Internet use the word "Korea" and "patents". Unfortunately, this method doesn't work well for the "invisible web", for example, when texts are stored in a database.  Further, if searching for Korean texts, it will be necessary to use Korean terms in han'gul, and the search will be most effective if you use a Korean search engine. Getting the full benefit out of search engines takes some practice. Note that results from different search engines will NOT be the same!  For links to several of these handy tools, see the section on Search Engines below.
