"Japan Law Translation": MOJ's New Search Page for English Translations of Japanese Laws

On April 1, 2009, the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) in Japan introduced it's new online search interface for the Japanese government's English translations of laws. The page also includes a search interface for the Japanese government's "Standard Bilingual Dictionary," a glossary produced by the government to standardize the English translation of legal terminology.

The powerful interface allows users to search with English or Japanese terms. "Keyword in Context" searching lets you search the full text of laws, and displays the hits in the context of the text in the laws. Laws may be retrieved in several convenient formats: bilingual side-by-side, bilingual alternating text, English only, or Japanese only. To the left of the law text, a clickable table of contents allows users to move efficiently through the text of the law to sections of interest. Any of these can be printed through your browser's print function, or you can opt for downloading the translations in either PDF, Word File, Text file, or XML format.

Standard bilingual dictionary (March 2009 Revised Edition)

March 2009: Japan's Cabinet Secretariat has issued a 2009 Revised Edition (平成２１年３月改訂版) of their Japanese-English legal dictionary, "法令用語日英標準対訳辞書 = Standard bilingual dictionary."

This dictionary was originally created in March 2006, and revised by the Japanese government as part of its law translation policy.

The PDF version of the dictionary may be found here (PDF). There is also a new CSV (Comma Separated Values Database) version, here.

National Diet Library's "雑誌記事索引" [Zasshi kiji sakuin] Has New RSS Feeds: Including Indexing for Many Japanese Legal Periodicals

The National Diet Library (NDL / 国会図書館 ) has announced that it will now provide RSS feeds to its detailed up-to-date indexing of thousands of Japanese periodicals. Many law-related publications are included. Users can select from a wide variety of titles to receive RSS notification as new articles in user-specified titles come out.

Waseda University Announces New Japanese Law Electronic Newsletter in English

Waseda University announced today that they are launching a new Japanese law newsletter. Here's the full text of the announcement:

Invitation to Japanese Law News Letter

Waseda University Institute of Comparative Law will start, as one of our 50th anniversary projects, an electronic newsletter on Japanese law to dispatch Japanese law information in English. While we also renewed our English web site, the significant point of this newsletter project is to deliver latest Japanese law information directly to your e-mail account every month! We hope our project will help scholars, practitioners, and any other people who are interested in Japanese law and seeking such information in English.
The following is the outline of our project.

Transparency of Japanese Law Project

This Kyushu University-based project provides English translations for many Japanese laws and court decisions in the fields of Corporate Law, Goods and Services Transaction Law, Financing Law, Intellectual Property Law, Insolvency law, Arbitration law, Civil litigation law, and Public International law. According to the website's home page, "The Transparency of Japanese Law Project aims to provide legal information on international transactions in Japan to the overseas community by organizing and translating into English, information which includes: overviews of Japanese law, specific Japanese legislation, doctrines, and case law."

Japanese Legal Articles Available for Free

Over 60 Japanese legal periodicals are now available in full-text online for free. The University of Washington Gallagher Law Library has provided a convenient list of these titles, with links that go directly to the Journal's homepage.
