| Richard S. L. Roddis had a distinguished career
encompassing private practice, government, business, and the
academy.
A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley (Boalt
Hall), he was the Insurance Commissioner of California after seven
years as a deputy attorney general, representing the state’s
insurance department. He was also in private practice for three
years in San Diego.
He joined the Law School’s faculty in 1968 and served as dean
from 1970 to 1978.
He left teaching in 1984 to become Chairman and Chief Executive

retired from that position in 1988 and engaged in insurance
business, regulatory, and litigation consulting practice until he
returned to active faculty status in the 1990-91 academic year.
After he died, in 1999, his family established a book fund to
honor him "and his great interest in reading and the law."
